Councilmember Jan Perry unveiled the beautiful original artwork, “Purple Heart,” February 14, 2008 at the Southern Hotel located in the heart of Central City East, an SRO Housing Corporation (SRO) residential property dedicated solely to Veterans of the United States’ Armed Services. A large-scale mosaic mural, “Purple Heart” was conceived and handmade by the many residents of Skid Row who participate in free workshops sponsored by Piece by Piece.
“I am honored to be a part of this loving Valentine’s Day gift and I join in celebrating and thanking our veterans here in Central City East. They have sacrificed for all of us and they deserve this honor,” said Councilwoman Perry.
The military decoration known as the “Purple Heart” is awarded to any member of the U.S. Armed Forces who was wounded or killed while serving his/her country. The mosaic, is a Valentine’s Day gift to the residents of the Southern and other veterans who call Central City East their home.
