How we began
The genesis of Piece by Piece was an inspirational trip to South Africa. After visiting several micro-enterprise agencies abroad and recognizing a need in our own communities, Founder Sophie Alpert decided to replicate the model with a program which would empower participants in underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
In 2007, Piece by Piece launched a first mosaic workshop in South Los Angeles, using recycled materials as the primary art supply. Broken tile, glass, china and found objects were transformed into creative works of art. The caliber of talent and artistic quality that has emerged is a testament to the professional artists that facilitate workshops.
Piece by Piece Today
In strategic partnership with Skid Row Housing Trust, Piece by Piece offers residents of Skid Row and South Los Angeles mosaic art workshops supporting wellness and quality of life with a path to earned income.
Operating out of our home base in the Trust's Star Apartment building on 6th and Maple, Piece by Piece offerings are a component of the many supportive services provided by the Trust's direct service staff. Personnel within Piece by Piece work collaboratively with professional staff serving residents of Skid Row Housing Trust buildings to promote wellness, improve stability, foster creativity and enhance quality of life.
Founder Sophie Alpert brought together the nurturing community that allowed Piece by Piece to blossom. An artist herself, she has demonstrated special artistry in recruiting an amazing staff to train community members who in turn meet the challenge to nurture their own creativity. Artisans use their new-found skills to strongly contribute to culture and beauty in the urban setting. What followed is tremendous support from the broader community by way of donated materials, financial contributions and commissions for Piece by Piece to fulfill orders for mosaic art.
