Piece by Piece provides workshops for the underserved communities in Los Angeles including South Los Angeles and the Central City East neighborhood known as "Skid Row". The population we serve includes homeless, recently homeless and very low income individuals who are often elderly, disabled, mentally ill, unemployed, chronically ill, victims of domestic violence or battling addiction problems.

South Los Angeles is plagued by chronic poverty, vast unemployment, domestic violence, substance abuse, gang activity and urban decay. The high school dropout rate is over 25 percent, and nearly a third of adults in the neighborhoods have less than a ninth-grade education. Families are living in the single highest concentration of urban poverty on the West Coast, and one of the four highest concentrations of urban poverty in the United States.

Skid Row, which encompasses approximately 50 square blocks between 3rd and 7th Street and Main and Alameda, is one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the Western United States.
