Group of 25 Educators will be conducting learning sessions at the Federation and visiting another site or two in advance of visiting our home base in Star Apartments. We discussed tentative timeframe for arrival at Star Apartments (240 E 6th Street 90014) at 2:00p on Wed Jan 13.
• We propose a brief presentation that provides insight about our work providing learning and earnings opportunities in mosaic art to residents of supportive housing, as summarized at www.piecebypiece.org/program-offerings. Following the presentation, we will provide a hands-on mosaic workshop led by our Artisans and Instructors (workshop activity of about 50 minutes).
• The group can then depart for Mercado La Paloma (3655 S. Grand Ave 90007), a commute of about 15 minutes. There, the group can visit our Gallery Shop, featuring mosaics and art made by Piece by Piece Artisans (as seen at The Piece Shop www.thepieceshop.com.)
• Mercado La Paloma is a merchant hub that includes several popular restaurants (http://www.yelp.com/biz/mercado-la-paloma-los-angeles). At your option, you might have your group enjoy refreshments of choice, or pre-order selections from one or more restauranteur. (I will provide you an orientation when we meet next week Wednesday.)
• The Mercado has a conference-room space that we can reserve for your wrap-up session. You have the option of planning for your group to dine together in that space, or all can dine in the Mercado and then gather in the conference room for a meeting.
Our staff member, Faye Smoley (copied on this message), is able to coordinate your experience, both at Star and the Mercado.
For the Art Activity at Star, you have several options. The Educators can each create a small individual work in mosaic, or join efforts on a group project. Our Program Director, Dawn, can share with you some options when you visit next week.
A per-person fare of $30 will provide for a workshop experience (making individual tiles or similar) coordination at both sites, and reservation of the Conference Room space.
If you would like to organize the group to create a work of art for installation at the Federation or elsewhere, Dawn can discuss with you any additional cost this might entail. In such case, our Artisans prepare some of the design prior to the workshop, and complete the piece after the activity for delivery to your office. The below photo provides an example – this work was made at a public fair for the LA Law Library.
