This 9" x 12" piece captures the iconic spirit of Bill Withers through a vibrant interplay of color and texture. Unique textural elements define the work: a stippled pattern recreates the texture of the singer's afro, while metallic silver beading traces the lapels of his dark jacket. Surrounding the figure, a dynamic background of electric blue tiles radiates outward like energy, framed by a border of speckled brown ceramic squares that ground the piece.
This piece was handcrafted by June, who channels a deeply personal narrative of resilience and motherly love into her art. Drawing inspiration from the soundtrack of her life, June reflects on a time of profound transition, noting that Withers was one of her favorite musicians when her daughter left for college. She shares that during that separation, she experienced homelessness, eventually finding housing just as her daughter graduated. In this portrait, she embodies the poignant sentiment, "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone!" celebrating both a musical legend and the enduring bond between mother and child.

June has an effervescent spirit. Her work has a lot of soul. Her approach is full of kindness and naiveness but also strength. She loves to make mosaics about nature but also she’s been working on portraits of famous people she admires, She had grown a lot and is not afraid of challenges. She is into social justice, equality, women’s rights, jazz, and color.

Piece by Piece provides no-cost mosaic art workshops to low-income residents of South Los Angeles, Skid Row, and surrounding areas. These classes provide folks who need it with the healing power of art by teaching them how to make mosaics, and in turn, the trade enables them to earn income through their unique creations.
Mosaic is a strong medium and we use a variety of new and recycled pieces to create our works of art. Our artists are trained in using the most professional techniques to ensure quality work. However, in rare occasions, there may be need for a repair. Piece by Piece offers repairs due to material defects on purchased items at no cost for two years from date of sale. For items that have been broken, left outside, or in need of other repairs, we will assess the extent of damage and, if repairs are possible, provide a quote to restore your item. We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unused, with tags, and in its original packaging.
