This Black History Month, we take a moment to celebrate the stories, art, and resilience of Black artists within the Piece by Piece community. This vibrant collective, comprising both current members and alumni, showcases the transformative power of mosaic art.

A vibrant mosaic mural has been installed in the courtyard of the newly constructed My Angel apartments by L.A. Family Housing The space is designated for veterans and individuals transitioning out of homelessness. This project is a testament to the power of art in transforming spaces and lives.

Previously, Hugo aimed to learn as many techniques as possible and master them gradually. His current goal is to emulate artists like Jose and Luz, who expertly utilize every piece of material. "Jose and Luz are an inspiration for me, and it's my goal to become more like them," Hugo shared, highlighting his commitment to continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence in mosaic art.

Using patterns based on traditional quilts, Piece by Piece, participants selected two to three colors, allowing them to focus on cutting techniques and placement styles. In addition to using basic nippers, artists were also able to try the more traditional hammer and hardie for cutting the pieces. 

More than six years after joining Piece by Piece and having learned so much, I was given an assignment to create a portrait of a recognizable person from my past. The choice of a suitable subject was clear. It had been nearly forty years since we had lost Marvin, and I had a great photo of my old basketball buddy on my phone.
