Recently, the artists, instructors, and staff of Piece by Piece embarked on a field trip to Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles' Arts District to explore the new exhibition called "Beyond Measure" by Thomas J Price, a talented British artist known for his diverse body of work.

In June, Piece by Piece participants studied micromosaics, a style of mosaic using small rods of glass to create tiny figurative images. While traditional Italian micromosaics are extremely intricate, in this workshop, instructor Ellen Dinerman guided artists to create more simple designs. By starting simple, artists were able to focus on the process for their first pieces.

Art brings me happiness and reduces my stress, allowing me to continue learning and growing at my own pace. I now have hope in my life. I wasn't satisfied before, but now I'm happy. I've realized that even as a slow learner or worker, I can create beauty. I can share my creations with friends and family, and together, we can build something meaningful.

"I'm open to working with any materials in mosaic art. I'm intrigued by all of it, regardless of what is used. I embrace the learning process and take on each project. For me, it's more about learning and becoming like the other participants in the program."

In March we were thrilled to have not one but three highly-skilled instructors share their talents and knowledge in a series of classes focusing on stained glass in mosaic. Piece by Piece receives hundreds of pounds of scrap glass, and it is a primary type of material used in our projects.

As Level 1 Certified Artist, John had to master core concepts in mosaic art including safety, cutting, adamento, color theory, finishing techniques and more. We sat down with John earlier this week to talk with him about how he came to Piece by Piece, and what he plans for his future.
